Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing these treatments must be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a reversion to starting weight within about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Experts suggest the way of the drugs explains the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Accounts
Users who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and you're instantly starving," said one woman.
The struggle is worsened if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Use
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Use is greater among women than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians caution that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural support.
